quarterstaves

Long defensive poles

Quarterstaves is the plural of quarterstaff, a wooden pole roughly six to eight feet long used as a weapon.

The quarterstaff was a standard weapon of medieval European combat, wielded with both hands for striking, blocking, and thrusting.

It appears frequently in Robin Hood legends: Robin and Little John dueled with quarterstaves on the log bridge.
