Chad is a small piece of paper or cardboard punched out from a card or tape—the tiny debris left over from hole-punching.

The word gained fame during the 2000 U.S. presidential election, when partially detached chads on Florida ballots (hanging chads, dimpled chads) became the center of a recount controversy.

In internet slang, a chad is a stereotypically attractive, confident, socially dominant man—often used ironically or in contrast to less successful types: He walked in like a total chad. (Capitalized Chad is a country or a given name.)
