absent

Away from present

Absent is typically an adjective that characterizes something that is not present: Four students were absent yesterday.

It is usually a predicate adjective but when used before a noun it often denotes something that is normally present: an absent father.

Absent can be used as a preposition, and is commonly used by journalists: Absent any legislative action, tax rates will be higher in 2013.
