dime novel
Lurid penny fiction
A dime novel was a cheap, mass-produced paperback of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, typically featuring sensational adventure stories about the frontier, detectives, or outlaws.
The term now applies loosely to any pulpy, formulaic fiction: The plot read like something out of a dime novel.
Named for its original ten-cent price.
