provitamin
Inactive vitamin form

Beta-carotene is a provitamin that becomes vitamin A; certain forms of cholesterol become vitamin D when exposed to sunlight.
The term distinguishes these precursor compounds from vitamins themselves: Provitamin A is abundant in orange and yellow vegetables.
