power-to-weight

Engine versus heft

Power-to-weight is the ratio of an engine's or vehicle's power output to its mass, a key measure of performance potential.

A high power-to-weight ratio means more acceleration capability: The motorcycle's power-to-weight makes it quicker off the line than most sports cars.

The concept applies beyond vehicles to any system where output relative to mass matters.
