pneumonitis

Inflamed lung tissue

Pneumonitis is inflammation of lung tissue, typically caused by irritants rather than infection—inhaled chemicals, dust, mold, radiation therapy, or certain medications.

It differs from pneumonia, which is specifically caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi.

Symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, and fatigue: The chemotherapy caused pneumonitis that required steroid treatment.
