antigen testing
Viral protein screening
Antigen testing detects specific proteins from a pathogen—most commonly viruses—to determine whether someone is currently infected.
Unlike PCR tests, which amplify genetic material, antigen tests identify viral proteins directly, yielding faster results but with lower sensitivity.
They became widely familiar during the COVID-19 pandemic as rapid home tests: I did an antigen test before visiting my parents.
