player piano

Roll-operated musical instrument

A player piano is a piano that plays itself mechanically, using a roll of perforated paper that triggers the keys without human hands.

Popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries before recorded music became widespread, these instruments allowed people to hear complex performances in their homes.

The paper rolls encoded the timing and duration of each note, and some systems could even reproduce the dynamics of an original performance.
