bleeding disorder

Coagulation system malfunction

A bleeding disorder is a medical condition in which the blood doesn't clot properly, causing prolonged or excessive bleeding from injuries, surgery, or sometimes spontaneously.

Hemophilia and von Willebrand disease are the best-known examples.

The term covers both inherited conditions and those acquired through disease or medication: She was diagnosed with a bleeding disorder after a routine dental extraction wouldn't stop bleeding.
