pitmen

Underground coal workers

Pitmen is the plural of pitman, a worker in a coal mine or other pit.

The term is chiefly British and historical, associated with the coal-mining regions of northern England and Scotland: The pitmen descended at dawn and didn't see daylight until evening.

In machinery, a pitman is a connecting rod that converts rotary to reciprocating motion.
