brattice
Shaft ventilation wall
A brattice is a partition in a mine shaft or tunnel that directs airflow for ventilation, typically made of cloth, wood, or other materials.
The term also applies to temporary wooden fortifications or parapets in medieval warfare.
In mining, brattices prevent stale or dangerous air from accumulating: They hung a brattice to channel fresh air to the working face.
