Davy lamp
Safe mine illumination
A Davy lamp is a safety lamp for use in coal mines, designed with wire gauze surrounding the flame to prevent it from igniting flammable gases.
The lamp also served as a gas detector—changes in the flame's appearance warned miners of dangerous methane levels.
Named for chemist Humphry Davy, who invented it in 1815.
