coal chutes
Cellar delivery passages
Coal chutes are sloped passages or channels through which coal is delivered from street level into a building's basement or cellar.
Common in older homes and buildings that relied on coal heating, they typically feature a small metal door on the exterior wall: The delivery man opened the coal chute and poured in a ton of anthracite.
Most coal chutes became obsolete when heating systems converted to oil or gas, though the sealed-over doors remain visible on many older structures.
