Pitman shorthand
Victorian dictation system
Pitman shorthand is a system for writing English rapidly using phonetic symbols instead of letters.
Developed in the nineteenth century, it represents sounds with simple strokes and curves, allowing skilled users to transcribe speech in real time.
It was the dominant shorthand system for court reporters, secretaries, and journalists before audio recording became widespread.
