banksman

Directs crane loads

A banksman is a worker who guides crane operators or vehicle drivers from ground level, using hand signals or radio communication to direct loads or maneuvers the operator cannot see.

The term comes from British industrial usage, particularly in mining and construction.

The banksman signaled the crane to lower the beam into position.
