pinons

Southwestern edible seeds

Pinons are pine nuts—the edible seeds of certain pine trees, especially the piñon pines native to the American Southwest.

The trees themselves are also called pinons.

The word is an anglicized spelling of the Spanish piñón: We gathered pinons from the forest floor.

The seeds are prized in cooking, particularly in pesto and Southwestern cuisine.
