coast redwoods
California's towering giants
Coast redwoods are the tallest trees on Earth, native to the fog belt along the Pacific coast from southern Oregon to central California.
These conifers can exceed 350 feet and live over two thousand years.
The soft, reddish bark and rot-resistant wood made them targets for logging; old-growth stands now survive mainly in protected parks.
Also called California redwoods.
We hiked through the coast redwoods at Muir Woods.
