Bucephalus
Bucephalus was the horse of Alexander the Great, famous in antiquity for being wild and untamable until young Alexander alone succeeded in riding him.
The name means "ox-head" in Greek.
Bucephalus carried Alexander through his conquests until the horse's death in battle, after which Alexander founded a city in his honor.
The name now evokes a legendary or beloved horse: He treats that old mare like she's Bucephalus.
