peroxidation

Radical oxygen attack

Peroxidation is a chemical reaction in which peroxides form, typically when oxygen reacts with organic compounds.

The term appears most often in biochemistry, where lipid peroxidation describes the oxidative degradation of fats in cell membranes—a process linked to aging, tissue damage, and disease: Antioxidants help prevent lipid peroxidation.
