penalty box

Enforcer's temporary home

The penalty box is the designated area where a hockey player serves time after committing a penalty, temporarily leaving their team shorthanded: He spent two minutes in the penalty box for tripping.

In soccer, the penalty box (or penalty area) is the rectangular zone in front of each goal where fouls by defenders result in penalty kicks.

Figuratively, being in the penalty box means being in a state of disfavor or punishment.
