overscan
Hidden screen margins
Overscan is the portion of a video image that extends beyond the visible edges of a display screen.
Traditional televisions intentionally cropped the outer edges of the picture to hide imperfections, so broadcasters placed essential content within a "safe area." Modern flat-panel displays can show the full image, but overscan settings may still crop edges by default: I had to disable overscan to see the whole desktop.
