overflow hole

Basin safety vent

An overflow hole is a small opening near the top of a sink, bathtub, or toilet tank that prevents water from spilling over the edge by providing a secondary drain when the water level rises too high.

The hole channels excess water back into the main drain, protecting against flooding if someone leaves the tap running or plugs the drain.

Most bathroom fixtures have one, though kitchen sinks often lack them.
