overdubbing

Adding recorded layers

Overdubbing is a recording technique where new audio is layered onto an existing track.

A singer might overdub harmonies onto a lead vocal, or a guitarist might overdub a solo onto a rhythm track.

The technique allows musicians to build complex arrangements one element at a time: The album took months because of all the overdubbing.

Also appears as overdub (noun and verb).
