acoustic recording
Sound without amplification
Acoustic recording refers to a method of capturing sound without electrical amplification, used before the development of microphones.
Performers played or sang into a horn that channeled sound waves directly to a cutting stylus, which etched grooves into a rotating disc or cylinder.
The term now distinguishes these early recordings from later electrical ones: The concert featured acoustic recordings from the 1920s.
It can also describe any recording made with acoustic rather than electronic instruments.
