original language
Native linguistic form
Original language refers to the language in which a text, film, or other work was first created, as opposed to translated or dubbed versions.
Watching a movie in the original language means hearing the dialogue as it was recorded, typically with subtitles for non-native speakers.
The term also appears in biblical and literary scholarship to distinguish source texts from translations: scholars consulted the original language to clarify the passage's meaning.
