nova
White dwarf outburst
A nova is a star that suddenly increases dramatically in brightness, then fades over weeks or months.
Unlike a supernova, the star isn't destroyed—it can flare repeatedly.
The term extends to anything that bursts onto the scene with sudden brilliance: She was a nova in the art world.
In casual use, nova sometimes just means new or innovative. (Capitalized Nova is a proper name.)
