black dwarf

Dead stellar cinder

A black dwarf is a theoretical stellar remnant—what a white dwarf would become after cooling for trillions of years until it no longer emits significant heat or light.

Since the universe is only about 13.8 billion years old, no black dwarfs are believed to exist yet; even the oldest white dwarfs remain too hot.

The term represents the final, cold endpoint in the lifecycle of low- to medium-mass stars.
