dark star

Black hole cousin

A dark star is a stellar object that emits little or no visible light.

In astrophysics, the term applies to several theoretical concepts: a star so massive that light cannot escape its gravitational pull (a precursor idea to black holes), or a hypothetical early-universe star powered by dark matter annihilation rather than nuclear fusion.

In popular usage, dark star carries a mystical or ominous quality—something powerful but hidden: She was the dark star of the art world, influential but rarely seen.
