kilonova
Stellar merger flash
A kilonova is an astronomical explosion produced when two neutron stars collide, or when a neutron star merges with a black hole.
Far brighter than a nova but dimmer than a supernova, kilonovas are thought to be the primary source of heavy elements like gold and platinum in the universe.
Astronomers detected a kilonova following the gravitational wave signal.
