non-self

Body's recognized intruder

Non-self refers to anything external to or distinct from one's own identity, body, or consciousness.

In immunology, non-self describes foreign substances the immune system recognizes as not belonging to the body: The immune system attacks non-self antigens.

In Buddhist philosophy, non-self (anattā) is the doctrine that no permanent, unchanging self exists—that what we call "self" is an illusion created by impermanent aggregates of experience.
