the self

One's own being

The self is one's own person considered as a distinct individual—the essential "I" that persists through time and experience.

Philosophy and psychology treat the self as the subject of consciousness, the thing that thinks and perceives: a sense of self, true to one's self.

The self can be divided conceptually: the public self versus the private self.

In compound forms, self typically means directed toward oneself: self-awareness, self-doubt, self-love.
