oneself

The inner self

Oneself is the reflexive form of the indefinite pronoun *one*, used when the subject and object refer to the same unspecified person: One must ask oneself whether the effort is worth it.

It appears in formal or philosophical contexts where *yourself* would sound too casual.

The word can also be emphatic: One has to see it oneself to believe it.
