short tons
American weight measures
A short ton is a unit of weight equal to 2,000 pounds, used primarily in the United States.
It contrasts with the long ton (2,240 pounds), used in Britain, and the metric ton or tonne (2,205 pounds).
When Americans say "ton" without qualification, they usually mean the short ton: The bridge has a weight limit of five tons.
