memory holes
Deliberate record destruction
Memory holes, from George Orwell's novel *1984*, are mechanisms for erasing inconvenient facts from the historical record.
In the novel, documents were literally dropped into chutes to be incinerated; the term now applies more broadly to any deliberate suppression or alteration of information.
The scandal disappeared down the memory hole within weeks.
When something goes down the memory hole, it vanishes as if it never existed, often through institutional or governmental action.
