institutional memory
Collective workplace knowledge
Institutional memory is the accumulated knowledge, practices, and history retained within an organization over time.
It lives in documents, procedures, and especially in long-tenured employees who remember why things are done certain ways.
When experienced workers leave without passing on what they know, institutional memory is lost: Half our institutional memory walked out the door when the senior staff retired.
