matinees

Early theater times

Matinees are afternoon performances, typically of plays, movies, or concerts, usually offered at reduced prices.

The word comes from French for "morning," though in English it settled on early afternoon: We caught the two o'clock matinee to save a few dollars.

A matinee idol was a handsome actor who attracted swooning afternoon audiences, mostly women.
