film archives
Cinema preservation vaults
Film archives are institutions or collections dedicated to preserving motion pictures, from early silent films to contemporary cinema.
They store, catalog, and restore films that might otherwise deteriorate or be lost: The film archives recovered a print of the 1922 original.
Major archives also make materials available to researchers and programmers.
The work is urgent—early film stock decays, and many silent-era films have already been lost forever.
