manor system
Lord's land arrangement
The manor system was the economic and social organization that dominated medieval Europe, in which a lord held land (a manor) worked by peasants or serfs who were bound to that land.
In exchange for labor and a share of their crops, peasants received protection and the right to farm small plots for themselves.
The system created a largely self-sufficient agricultural unit where the lord administered justice, collected dues, and controlled essential resources like mills and ovting ovens.
It gradually declined with the rise of money-based economies and the emergence of towns.
