luffed

Turned toward wind

Luffed is the past tense of luff, a sailing term.

To luff is to steer a boat closer to the wind, causing the sails to flap or lose power.

A sail luffs when it's not properly filled with wind: The mainsail luffed as we turned into the breeze.

Sailors luff intentionally to slow down or spill excess wind.
