artistic licence

Bending the truth

Artistic licence is the freedom to depart from fact, convention, or strict accuracy for creative effect.

A filmmaker might alter historical events for dramatic purposes; a painter might distort proportions for emotional impact.

The term often appears as justification or criticism: That's not how it happened—she took artistic licence.

Also spelled artistic license.
