sand bars
Submerged coastal mounds
Sandbars are ridges of sand built up by currents in rivers, lakes, or coastal waters.
They form where water slows and deposits sediment, often creating shallow areas hazardous to boats: The kayak scraped bottom on a sandbar.
At low tide, sandbars may become exposed, creating temporary islands.
Also spelled as one word: sandbar.
