laser disk
Shiny video predecessor
A laser disk (also laserdisc) is an optical storage medium for video, predecessor to DVDs and Blu-rays.
Popular from the 1980s through the mid-1990s, laser disks were LP-sized platters that used laser light to read analog video and digital audio.
They offered superior picture quality to VHS tapes but never achieved mainstream adoption due to their size, cost, and inability to record.
