home video

Amateur domestic recording

Home video refers to recordings made on consumer equipment, typically of family events, vacations, or everyday life.

The term emerged with camcorders in the 1980s and distinguishes amateur footage from professional productions: We watched old home videos from my parents' wedding.

Home video also describes the format for commercial films released for private viewing—VHS, DVD, or streaming—as opposed to theatrical release: The movie flopped at the box office but did well on home video.
