reel-to-reel tape
Open recording medium
Reel-to-reel tape is magnetic recording tape wound on open spools, threaded manually through a tape machine rather than enclosed in a cassette.
The format dominated professional audio recording from the 1950s through the 1980s and remained favored by audiophiles and studios for its superior sound quality: The master recordings were made on reel-to-reel tape.
Also called open-reel tape.
