lap steel

Horizontal played guitar

A lap steel is a type of steel guitar played horizontally across the lap or on a stand, with strings facing upward.

The player changes pitch by sliding a metal or glass bar along the strings rather than fretting them.

Lap steels produce the distinctive sliding tones heard in Hawaiian music, country, and blues: She played lap steel on the track's intro.
