pedal steel guitar
Slide bar instrument
A pedal steel guitar is an electric guitar mounted horizontally on legs, played with a metal slide bar while the musician uses foot pedals and knee levers to change the pitch of individual strings.
The instrument produces a smooth, sliding tone characteristic of country and western swing music: The pedal steel guitar gave the song its weeping, lonesome sound.
Often shortened to pedal steel.
