lamplighter

Dusk rounds worker

A lamplighter was a person employed to light and extinguish gas streetlamps, walking a route at dusk and dawn with a long pole.

The occupation disappeared with electric lighting but survives in figurative use for anyone who brings illumination or leads the way: She was a lamplighter for the civil rights movement.
