lamplighters
Dusk's walking workers
Lamplighters were workers who lit and extinguished gas street lamps before electric lighting, traveling routes at dusk and dawn with long poles.
The term now appears mostly in historical contexts or figuratively for those who bring light or enlightenment to others.
The last lamplighters disappeared from city streets by the mid-twentieth century.
