gas lantern

Propane-powered illuminator

A gas lantern is a portable light source that burns fuel—typically propane, butane, or white gas—to produce illumination.

Unlike electric lanterns, gas lanterns generate light through combustion, usually heating a fragile mesh mantle that glows brightly.

They remain popular for camping and outdoor use where electricity is unavailable: We hung the gas lantern from a tree branch to light the campsite.
